How to Wear Ruffles

{our favorite ruffle-inspired pieces for spring}

It’s an age-old detail that used to cover pretty much every item of clothing a woman owned, but today you’re more likely to only see ruffles on wedding dresses or the red carpet. With spring just around the corner though, we can’t help but eye girly details like pastels and ruffles. But, how do you wear ruffles without looking like human dessert?

Olivia Pope is our ultimate inspiration for this trend: think simple details in classic cuts and neutral shades. Notice the subtle ruffles on the bottom of her jackets and the scalloped shell underneath that creates an illusion of horizontal ruffles.

To get Olivia’s look, we’re eyeing one of these options: a black jacket with ruffles on the bottom, this white blazer that will last all sumer-long or this tweed blue jacket that’s bound to make a statement wherever you go.

We’re also dying over this look – the ruffles lining the jacket are feminine, yet when paired with pearls and a pencil skirt, it still looks put-together and professional. For a similar look, try this black jacket!

If you’re not much of a ruffled jacket kind of gal, try a ruffled blouse like this or a skirt with a few big ruffles on the bottom. If you’re feeling especially sassy, this Donna Karan skirt with side ruffles is stunning!

The key to wearing ruffles (and still looking classy), is to keep the look simple. Keep the ruffles loose and use them as an accent piece for your entire outfit. For example, if you’re wearing a jacket with ruffles, balance it out with a simple pencil skirt or slacks.
